I started integrating my perspectives using ChatGPT last night and asked it to name the concept and it came back with Valuism, after reading your post I have to say I agree with what you've written and that I guess I'm a Objectivist-Valuist, with the wider abstraction simply being a Valuist!

Here are the concepts that my GPT and I think integrate well with Objectivist-Valuism:

Objectivism, FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early), Minimalism, Entrepreneurship, Self-Improvement, Sustainability, Stoicism, Biohacking, Remote Work, Digital Nomadism, Mindfulness, Creative Expression, Lifelong Learning, Physical Wellness, Secular Humanism, Ethical Technology Use, Intentional Communities, Epicureanism, Ikigai, Transhumanism, Ethical Egoism, Stoic Pragmatism, Antifragility, Aestheticism, Cybernetic Feedback Loops, Nomadism, Integral Theory, Constructive Journalism, Human-Centered Design, Self-Esteem, Individual Sovereignty, Rational Parenting, Systems Thinking, Voluntary Simplicity, Libertarianism, Personal Branding, Polyamory, Virtue Ethics, Behavioral Economics, Classical Liberalism, Existential Psychology, Resilience Theory, Innovation Theory, Flow Theory, Positive Liberty, Romantic Realism, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Critical Thinking.

Inspired,

"You are not necessarily “wrong,” “immoral,” or “irrational” if you don’t create more of what you intrinsically value"

If you can perform an action that you believe will create net positive value in expectancy, and you choose to do nothing instead, you are acting irrationally, no?

In reply to <a href="https://www.spencergreenberg.com/2023/02/doing-what-you-value-as-a-way-of-life-an-introduction-to-valuism/#comment-35508">N/A</a>.

Thanks for your comment. I find it confusing, though. What definition of utilitarianism do you prefer?

I didn't say that all flavors of utilitarianism require moral realism - I said "An additional advantage of Valuism over some other life philosophies (such as most flavors of utilitarianism) is that it doesn't rely on you believing in objective moral truth"

Valuism does not require anti-realism. I also disagree that it is a flavor of pluralist utilitarianism (I'd be curious to know what definition of utilitarianism you're using where it seems to be that).

This essay doesn't really get into criticisms of utilitarianism as that's not the topic - what I say is: "Note: If you happen to identify as a utilitarian and believe that you only have one intrinsic value - the happiness of all conscious beings considered equally - you may want to check your reactions on these thought experiments to put that theory to the test." This is a gut test of a person's intrinsic values, it is not a test of utilitarianism as a moral theory.

Why is utilitarianism so narrowly defined in this essay? Utilitarians haven't been exclusive hedonist since at least Moore in the 1900s, and hasn't required moral realism since at least Hare in the 1960s. 'Valuism' just seems like a pluralist and anti-realist flavour of utilitarianism. I would also recommend Hare for strong pushback on the idea that utilitarianism should be rejected just because it is counterintuitive - it's not at all clear that ethics should be done by simplistic one-level intuition pumping.
