And I forgot to mention in my earlier comment of "self-control": learning to breath properly from the diaphragm (belly breathing) and maintaining a good posture throughout the day, can be great start to having a good hold on our self-control, as well as a positive outlook towards life. :-)

It all boils down to working on strengthening your internal power of "self-control".

You can design your surroundings to keep away triggers of momentary urges. (e.g. Switch off those devices for a good time, don't even buy those bad foodstuffs in the first place etc.)

You can work internally on being mindful of a momentary urge and being able to smile at it and think, maybe I'll consider it again in 3 days.

You can design new workflows of how you go about your work and life, so you are involved in doing constructive things that ultimately provide you with a self-pride, contentment & peace.
You may also have to consider switching your field of study or career if that's the cause of internal conflicts.

In reply to Spencer.

Glad you liked. TDT is something I'm familiar with but really need to settle in on and read when I have nothing else going on. It's a hard one to read on the run, and though I've skimmed some articles on LW, I don't think it's the kind of subject one can get by skimming... even still, I wanted to put it forward just to mention it :)

Thanks for posting this. I'm a fan of Timeless Decision Theory as applied to self help, and have recommended people use it before, mainly as a means of increasing motivation to change abruptly and permanently. Zvi's article does a nice job of explaining how to apply it in one's own life!

My mind was shouting "Timeless Decision Theory" the whole time I read this. Have you run across it at LessWrong? Here's the LW wiki summary on TDT. Relating to your overeating example, you just may love this!
